Flatbed freight for building materials

Building materials do not fit in a standard dry van door. Lumber, steel, roofing, and precast pieces need open-deck equipment, proper securement, and carriers who know the rules.

Flatbed vs step-deck

A standard flatbed works for loads that fit within legal height and can be tarped if needed. Step-deck (drop-deck) gives you extra height for taller freight without needing a lowboy.

Tell your broker the dimensions — length, width, height, and weight — not just "a bundle of steel." Over-dimensional freight may need permits and escorts. That changes price and lead time.

Securement matters

FMCSA rules require proper tie-downs for open-deck freight. Experienced flatbed carriers know how to secure lumber packs, coil, and pipe. Inexperienced ones create roadside delays and liability.

Ask whether the carrier has hauled your product type before. A broker who places building materials regularly can filter for that experience.

Weather and tarps

Some loads need tarps. Some need conestogas. Some can ride open if the receiver accepts it. Rain on untreated lumber is a claim waiting to happen. Spell out tarp requirements when you quote.

Winter adds frozen deck surfaces and slower tarping. Spring construction season adds tight capacity on popular lanes. Plan ahead when you can.

Appointments and job sites

Construction deliveries often go to active job sites, not standard docks. Give the carrier clear directions, site contact name, and any gate or safety requirements. Detention adds up when a driver sits waiting for a crane or forklift.
