Midwest freight does not move at one steady pace all year. Capacity tightens and loosens with seasons — sometimes predictably, sometimes because of a late frost or an early snow. Shippers who plan around the patterns spend less time scrambling.
Spring and summer — construction and produce
Building season pulls flatbed and step-deck capacity toward job sites. Lumber, roofing, and steel get competitive on popular lanes. If you ship building materials out of Central Indiana, book early when you can.
Produce season adds reefer demand. Michigan fruit, Indiana melons, and regional vegetables all need cold trucks on overlapping weeks. Reefer rates climb when produce regions all peak at once.
Fall — harvest and retail buildup
Harvest moves grain, seed, and ag inputs. Equipment needs vary — hopper, van, flatbed depending on the product. Ag shippers know their windows. General freight shippers may not realize how much capacity harvest pulls off the spot market.
Retail starts building inventory for the holidays. Dry van demand rises on lanes into distribution centers. Appointment windows get tighter.
Winter — weather and slowdowns
Snow and ice slow transit across I-65, I-70, and I-69. Drivers run legal hours with less margin. Some carriers park equipment until roads clear. Rates spike on lanes that still must move — food, medical, heat-sensitive product.
Not every winter is harsh. But budget extra transit time from December through February.
Holiday weeks
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's shrink the driver pool. If your freight must move those weeks, plan further ahead and expect premium pricing on hot lanes.
